SHOWCASE IV

CRUZ DE ALTAR DEL CARDINAL RODRIGO DE CASTRO
In this showcase we can see the altar cross that presided over the Eucharistic celebration of the Cardinal, with an ebony cross and pedestal and bronze finishes. The image, which was carved in ivory, was stolen by the Napoleonic troops, as well as several reliquaries that were embedded in it, for having silver or gold boxes. The current image is terracotta.

CANDLES OF OFFERING TO THE PATRON OF THE FOUNDATION
In the constitution deed of the Fundación Colegio Nª Sª de la Antigua, Cardinal Rodrigo de Castro imposed a curious obligation on the Jesuits, in addition to teaching the children of Monforte. It is a recognition that the College had to make to the Patron of the Foundation, giving him a candle each year.We read it like this in the Foundation’s constitution deed of 1593:
… “And he named the Lords of the house of Lemos as Patrons of said school and so that they may be perpetually forever and ever, starting with the Hon. Mr. Don Fernando Ruiz de Castro, who at present is and continuing those who perpetually succeed him later, obliged the said college, rector and religious of him to give to such Patron as a sign and recognition of said Patronage, which as said is must be the Mr. who is or will be of the said house of Lemos, a white wax candel that weighs three pounds with my weapons in it in each year on the day of the Feast of the Advocation of Our Lady of the visitation that falls to of July»
